  • Salary: £45K-65K (dependent on skills & experience)
  • Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Are you looking to make your mark in a developer-centric and technology-focused software company? NewOrbit are looking for skilful software engineers wanting to expand their experience and be a central part of our exciting and growing team.

About Us

NewOrbit is a successful, innovative business that has been delivering software for nearly 15 years. We are a skilled and close-knit team, who work together to deliver entirely bespoke, highly-scalable, cloud-hosted web applications for our clients. We collaborate with a wide variety of clients, which means you gain exposure to lots of different industries - and challenges to solve.

Our stack is typically React, .NET, and Azure SQL Server or Cosmos DB, but expect variations on that as NewOrbit host everything on Azure using a wide range of the available technologies. We're a Microsoft Solutions Partner, working very closely with Microsoft, including on new Azure technologies before they are released to the general public.

Candidate Requirements

Our ideal candidate is someone with breadth, including C#, TypeScript, HTML/CSS, and SQL. You don’t need to be an expert in all of them, but you do need some full-stack experience. Ideally, you’ll have had some exposure to distributed system design and the full life-cycle of software development.

You will be comfortable estimating and designing features, and communicating with others. For a more senior role, you’ll need experience in technical leadership. There’s no staff management required for this role, but if that’s your one of your career goals then we have opportunities for that too.

NewOrbit use Agile software development methods, so you should understand these approaches. If you’ve done Scrum that’s ideal, but an Agile mindset is more important.

Although not essential for the role, some test automation experience (e.g. test architecture, CI/CD) would be advantageous.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Working as part of a small project team where everyone is involved in the planning and execution of work.
  • Producing clean code to agreed timescales and quality.
  • Owning features and delivering them with minimal supervision.
  • Reviewing and submitting pull requests.
  • Handing over features for acceptance testing.
  • Owning or contributing to technical design and architecture.

For more senior candidates you would also be:

  • Leading a small project team of developers, you would be working alongside a project manager and product owner, but still very 'hands-on' and in code day-to-day.
  • Mentoring other members of the development team.
  • Assessing new technologies and patterns.
  • Helping us to interview potential candidates for the team.

Why NewOrbit?

Being part of NewOrbit is much more than just a salary and holiday allowance (although those are important too!). Your package will include the following benefits, so you can share in our success:

  • 25 days holiday (+bank holidays)
  • Hybrid and remote working options – expect to visit our offices occasionally, ideally weekly. But let us know if you need more — or less!
  • Profit share scheme (discretionary)
  • Pension scheme (including salary sacrifice options)
  • Private healthcare
  • Life assurance
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • A friendly environment full of fellow enthusiasts:
    • Meals out
    • Activity days & retreat weekends
    • Outdoor gym & ping-pong

Work with us to:

  • Enjoy what you do: We hire smart people who share our drive and are genuinely proud of our team. We do projects that we believe in and aren't afraid to challenge clients (and say no). We get our work done and go home - there's no late-night working culture here.
  • Grow your career: Our supportive environment and clear career paths help you thrive. NewOrbit provide access to Pluralsight and Frontend Masters on-demand training and share knowledge within the team through tech talks & coding sessions. We can also provide you with time or learning resources to get Azure certified.
  • Stay interested: We welcome innovation and stay at the forefront, actively encouraging side projects and experimentation. We provide you with monthly Azure credits that you can use for whatever you like.
  • Have an impact: Our driver is to make a positive difference to our clients and the team, so we look for people who own problems and feel personal pride in what they do. We rely on everyone in the team to look outwards and help decide and drive our technical strategy. If you think there's something we can do better, we'll listen.

Application Process

Interested?

  1. Please send your CV and any useful links you might have (Stack Overflow, GitHub, open source projects) to recruitment@neworbit.co.uk
  2. The next step would be a short 10-15 minute telephone call to have a quick chat about what you are interested in and your past experience.
  3. After that you would be invited for an interview - virtually or in-person. To keep things moving fast, we have up to three interviews in one session, including a programming exercise, some Q&A around your experience, a conversation about values etc., and of course an opportunity for you to ask us questions! You will then get feedback on our decision - either way - and we might even make you an offer there and then!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Please note:

  • This role is UK based and candidates are required to have the legal right to work in the UK for employment.
  • A background check (including criminal records check and references) is required for this role.
  • NewOrbit are committed to a safe work environment that supports and respects equality, diversity and inclusion within our team.
