Better search results with AI-based search

by Patrick McMichael | 26/04/2024

Helping your users find the information they want on your website or in your system can be challenging with traditional search tools. New AI-based search tools, such as the Vector Search in Azure AI Search (formerly Azure Cognitive Search), can make this dramatically better. In this video, NewOrbit CTO Frans Lytzen talks with Patrick McMichael about how NewOrbit helped Fizz Benefits add AI to their search capability to drastically improve the user experience.

Key take-aways: Azure AI Search offers substantial benefits over "just text search" straight out of the box, such as weighting, synonyms, stemming and much more. When combined with "Vector" or "Semantic" Search it becomes astonishing; this allows the Search tool to understand the meaning in the text and thus find documents that match the user's intent rather than just find documents that match certain key words.

NewOrbit are implementing this for a wide range of customers, from understanding which retailer is more likely to have the kind of products you are looking for, to better matching candidates with jobs.

AI Isn’t Magic: Why Predictive Accuracy Can Be Misleading

by Frans Lytzen | 15/04/2025

One of the biggest misconceptions in AI today is how well it can actually predict things – especially things that are rare. This is most directly applicable to Machine Learning (as they are just statistical models) but the same principle applies to LLMs. The fundamental problem is the same and AI is not magic. In reality, AI’s predictive power is more complicated. One of the key challenges? False positives—incorrect detections that can significantly undermine the value of AI-driven decision-making. Let’s explore why this happens and how businesses can better understand AI’s limitations.
